When You Are Old, You Will Not Count the Money in Your Account, But the People Who Truly Love You

Petru Cojocaru Stiință și civilizație 01 July 2026 Hits: 249 33 minutes read

The Newspaper, the Morning, the Silence. When You Are Old, You Will Not Count the Money in Your Account, But the People Who Truly Love You I remember the morning clearly, though I could not tell you the exact date. It was one of those provincial Romanian autumn mornings when Botoșani wraps itself in a particular grey that is not quite fog and not quite cloud — a diffusion of light that makes everything feel slightly provisional, as if the day has not yet committed to existing. My father was still alive. He was sitting at the kitchen table with his hands around a mug of tea, and he was reading a newspaper. Not the economic supplement. Not the business pages. He was reading the human interest section — stories about ordinary people doing unremarkable things in unremarkable places — and he was completely absorbed.

"The most important investment you can make is in yourself. The second most important is in the people around you." — Paraphrased from Warren Buffett's philosophy of life

I asked him once why he never read the financial news. He was a mechanic. He understood systems: the hydraulic logic of a brake line, the thermal economy of an engine that runs cold in winter. Surely he would be curious about the economy, about markets, about the machinery of money. He looked up from the paper. He said: "I already know how that ends."

I did not understand him then. I was young enough to believe that not understanding something was a temporary condition — that all mysteries dissolved eventually into information, that the gap between ignorance and knowledge was merely a matter of time and effort. I thought he was being dismissive. Now I think he was being precise.

What he meant, I have come to believe, was not that he knew the outcome of any particular stock or currency. He meant that he understood the narrative structure of the financial story — its rising action, its false climaxes, its final reckoning. He had watched men in the neighbourhood accumulate things: a second car, a larger flat, a dacha outside the city. He had watched those same men grow incrementally lonelier with each acquisition, their worlds narrowing as their possessions multiplied. He understood how it ended because he had seen it end, repeatedly, in the lives of men he knew.

It was only years later, reading a transcript of a speech by Warren Buffett — a man whose relationship to capital is rather more complex than my father's — that I found the same thought expressed in a different register. Buffett, speaking to students at a university, said something to the effect that when you arrive at old age, you will not measure your life by the balance in your account. You will measure it by the number of people who genuinely love you. The specificity of "genuinely" matters. Not professionally admire. Not politely tolerate. Not dutifully attend. Love, with all the inconvenience and irrationality that word implies.

I have been thinking about that idea — and about my father's newspaper, and about Cory Doctorow's recent arguments about technofeudalism, and about what it means to be a person living inside the attention economy — ever since.

Hei! Avem alternative de email marketing în Europa

Petru Cojocaru Dezvoltare personală 30 April 2024 Hits: 916 15 minutes read

The Bounded Space in Which Danger Has Been Excluded in Advance

Petru Cojocaru AI - o unealtă 01 October 2026 Hits: 831 40 minutes read

The fence in the park.

On freedom, limits and speed, from the fairy tale to automated computing systems.

In brief Freedom is not the absence of the fence, but the bounded space in which danger has been excluded in advance. From this follows a simple and uncomfortable thesis: the speed at which we can move, in a story or in a technology, depends on the quality of the limits we have set. Not on their number, but on how visible, proportionate, easy to revise and well understood they are. I start from a dog park, pass through the prohibition in fairy tales, the sacrifice in the legend of Master Manole and the rites of initiation, arrive at the mechanisms by which automated computing systems are constrained today, and stop at the cost of the fence, which nobody gets for free.

"I take my little dog to the dog park because I want him to have freedom, but I don't want him to run into the street. The dog sees the fence and does not go past it. He can play freely, and I know he is safe. The key to moving fast [in AI development] is having the right guardrails."

(The text from which this essay sets out, reproduced verbatim. Keith Fulton, Chief Data Officer and Chief AI Officer at the fintech company Jack Henry)

The cursor that blinked

In 1997 I spent six months in a room in Botoșani where, strictly speaking, I had no business being. I had enrolled in a two-week course, "IBM PC Operator". The course ended, but the room stayed open. There were two computers that worked and one taken apart, an instructor who chose not to notice that I came in every day, and a black screen bearing a single line, C:\>, followed by a cursor that appeared and disappeared every half second.

Nothing appeared on that screen of its own accord. If I did not type, nothing changed. If I typed an exact command, the command was executed exactly. If I got a letter wrong, a terse message appeared, without explanation and without tone, and I was left to work it out. It was, as I would say now, a pure tool: everything that happened began with me and stopped where I stopped.

And yet, even there, on so passive a machine, there was a fence.

If I gave the command that deletes all the files in a directory, the program did not execute it on the spot. It displayed a question, in English, whether I was sure, and waited until I pressed a letter: yes or no. If I tried to prepare the disk for fresh use — which meant erasing everything on it — the message was more emphatic still: all data on the disk will be lost. None of this stopped me doing as I pleased. The fence was not a prohibition. It was a second gate, placed exactly in front of the one gesture that can no longer be undone, and it asked one small thing: to repeat, consciously, what a moment earlier I had done in haste.

Today I believe it was precisely that question which let me experiment. On a computer that everyone in the room depended on, a beginner like me would have been a danger if every mistyped command could have wiped everything with no brake. As it was, I could type fast, I could try commands I did not yet understand, I could read, err, start again. The speed at which I learned in that half-year did not come from an absence of limits. It came from the fact that the one place where a mistake cost a great deal was guarded.

Years later, when I began working with websites and far more complicated machines, I recognised the idea under other names: backup copies, access rights, staging environments. All are variants of the 1997 question. They do not say "don't do it"; they say "do it, but not where you can no longer turn back."

Everything that follows is about this simple structure.

Petru Cojocaru AI - o unealtă 30 July 2025 Hits: 432 1 minute read

Petru Cojocaru AI - o unealtă 30 July 2025 Hits: 596 1 minute read

Petru Cojocaru Cybersecurity 09 April 2024 Hits: 1249 12 minutes read

Petru Cojocaru Platforme sociale 18 July 2025 Hits: 801 18 minutes read

Facebook ad boycott organizers met with Zuckerberg. It didn't go well

Petru Cojocaru Platforme sociale 09 July 2020 Hits: 785 4 minutes read

(CNN Business)Civil rights and activist groups blasted Facebook's leadership on Tuesday after meeting with CEO Mark Zuckerberg and other executives to discuss the demands of a large advertiser boycott that now includes hundreds of brands.

"The meeting we just left was a disappointment," said Rashad Robinson, the president of Color of Change. "[Facebook] showed up to the meeting expecting an 'A' for attendance."
Free Press, a media activist group and one of the organizers of the #StopHateForProfit campaign to halt ad spending on the social network, said Facebook still has not taken the boycott's calls to action seriously.
"Instead of committing to a timeline to root out hate and disinformation on Facebook, the company's leaders delivered the same old talking points to try to placate us without meeting our demands," said Free Press Co-CEO Jessica Gonzalez. "Facebook approached our meeting today like it was nothing more than a PR exercise."
In a statement, Facebook spokesman Andy Stone said the company has established new policies banning voting and census suppression and removed more than 200 white supremacist organizations from the platform.

What Is Two-Factor Authentication, And Why You Should Use It

Petru Cojocaru Site promotion 29 August 2017 Hits: 793 2 minutes read

What Is Two Factor Authentication And Why You Should Use It Identity TheftTwo-factor authentication (2FA) is a security method that requires two different ways of proving your identity. It is commonly used in everyday life. For example paying with a credit card not only requires the card, but also a PIN, a signature, or an ID. With 1FA becoming increasingly unreliable as a security measure, two-factor authentication is rapidly gaining importance for logging into online accounts.

Per default, almost all online accounts use password authentication, i.e. a one-factor authentication method. The problem with passwords is that they are easily hacked. A further problem is that many users still use one and the same password for all their accounts. While being a bit of a hassle, 2FA significantly increases security by asking for an additional authentication factor, thus making it much harder to hack an account.

What Exactly Is Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

As mentioned in the introduction, 2FA is a login method. The two authentication factors can be one of the following:

Something you know, typically a password or the answer to a security question
Something you have, for example a security code sent to your mobile or an ATM card
Something you are, i.e. biometric data such as your fingerprints

Everyday examples where 2FA is employed are drawing money from the ATM (card + PIN), paying with a credit card (card + signature OR card + PIN OR card + security code), or entering a foreign country (passport + biometric data).

A Metaphor for Browsing the Internet Without Protection

Petru Cojocaru BROWSER≠intimacy 20 September 2026 Hits: 1063 17 minutes read

At the Market, Everyone Knows You

Author’s Note: This article uses a declared narrative fiction—a walk through the agro-food market in Botoșani—as a metaphor for browsing the internet without protection. The market scenes are literary constructs, not journalistic accounts. The technical guide within the article is real and functional. The article was written with assistance, in accordance with the transparency policy declared on this site.

It’s a Saturday morning.

I leave the house at half past eight.

The main market in Botoșani is a twenty-minute walk away—past the town hall, down the back of the cultural centre. I’ve known the route since I was a child. I could walk it blindfolded—the puddles after the rain, the occasional whiff of diesel from a passing cart, the vendors’ voices calling out prices to no one in particular and to everyone at once.

But this morning, something is different.

At the first street corner, a man I don’t know looks up from his phone and says, “Good morning. Off to buy vegetables?”

I stop. I stare at him. I don’t recognise him.

“How do you know that?” I ask.

“You go every Saturday,” he says simply. “You usually buy tomatoes, cucumbers if they’re good, sometimes cheese from the woman at the second corner. You buy less when it’s the end of the month. It’s the end of the month now.”

I swallow hard and walk on without answering. At the next corner, a woman with a notebook in her hand greets me before I can even look at her: “We know you have high blood pressure, Mr. Petru. The woman at the cheese stall said you take it unsalted.”

At the market entrance, a man in an orange vest stops me politely: “We have a special offer on spine supplements. We know you spend a lot of time at your desk.”

I turn around and go home. I haven’t bought a thing.

This is fiction. There are no people with notebooks at the street corners of Botoșani—only a complex web of interests, but within the bounds of common sense.

But there are browsers.

And your browser, in its default configuration, does exactly what I described above—with one key difference: it does it invisibly, without warning, and sells the collected information before you even get home.
